...See What God Has Done...

I can't ponder God's blessings in my life without thanking Him for the incredible parents He's given me.

Neither of my parents grew up with godly role models to follow. In fact, my dad lost his biological father when he was only 2, and was then raised in a series of orphanages and foster homes till he was in 6th grade. If ever there was someone to blame his past for his decisions today, it's my dad. But he never did that...because even through those painful, difficult years, God's grace was so evident in my dad's life. Through the painful events of my dad's childhood, he eventually came to live with the wonderful couple who became my grandparents. They took in my dad and his brother as their own sons. And it was there that God began tilling up the soil of my dad's heart, preparing him for His Truth to penetrate his soul.

Though raised in a moral and religious home, my mom lived her childhood following a list of rules. Her family was widely recognized and respected within the community, but they lacked the joy and satisfaction that comes from being in a relationship with Christ.

As my parents married on that beautiful July day, 35 years ago, they did not know the God before whom they stood. But just a few years later, when I was just a year old, they both recognized their desperate need for Jesus. Following a crusade at the church they attended, they received Him as their Savior. And there began the exciting transformation and change within our home and family.

So as I reflect on my wonderful parents, I give thanks for the memory of my dad placing his hand on my forehead and praying over me each night as I went to sleep. I’m thankful that when I came out of my room after getting ready for school each morning, I found him having his devotions in his favorite chair. I’m thankful that when I came home from school each afternoon, I found my mom’s Bible and devotional guide still on the table...evidence that she’d met with God. I’m so glad that they taught us the importance of meeting regularly with a fellowship of believers. Church attendance was not optional in our home, and they regularly supported our youth activities and functions. I’m so grateful that they taught my brother and me the importance of tithing and giving to God first. I’m thankful that they taught us...by example...how to save and wisely use the money that God had entrusted to us. I’m thankful that they remained faithful, not only to one another, but to their God. And I’m thankful that they have given our family such a rich, godly heritage. We rise up and bless them.

Thanks so much, God, for my dad and mom...
