Blogging moments present themselves when I least expect them. I'm generally a blogger who gets inspired and then can't wait to get to the keyboard to get it all out. But less often I write catch-up types of posts, just chronicling our days so I don't forget. Excuse me as I compose just such a post.
Today is my husband's day off, better known for all these years as "Family Day." As I've mentioned before, Family Day takes all different forms in our house. Sometimes it's a big, much-anticipated family event. Sometimes it's a simple family hike. Sometimes we go out to eat...sometimes we simply have a quiet family meal at home. The common component is that we try hard to protect it; to not schedule events that will take our family in opposite directions. Often it works; sometimes it does not.
Take today, for instance. Before any of my guys were awake, I was able to meet with my sisterchicks for Bible study and prayer. How I thank God for these sweet moments of communion with God and one another. Feeling refreshed and refueled, I left there and met my guys at the baseball field for Son #3's game---a win, by the way!
Upon returning home, we tackled some of the neglected tasks of the week. My sweet husband often volunteers to do the dishes on Thursdays. Why is it that everything seems so much cleaner and more sparkly when he does them?
Anyhow, upon completion of our indoor tasks, our boys headed out on their paper route while my husband and I retreated to our front porch. He and I are often found sitting on our wicker loveseat with our mugs of coffee, surrounded by the sweet scent of flowers and basil. We revel in the sight of "our" lake. We communicate and connect and dream. This is one of my favorite places in the world.
Before long it was time to get back to the necessary tasks. My husband and Son #1 are currently at the bank opening up an account for our son. You see, while he's been a substitute paperboy for a year, the job is officially now his. After going to the bank, they needed to visit the paper office to sign all the necessary papers to get the route switched over to him. And once again, I'm reminded of the countless ways our sons are growing...and I can't help but whisper, "Thank You, God."
That pretty much brings me to now. It's time for me to go start on dinner, as my working men will soon return home with voracious appetites. The younger men are in the backyard playing...what else? More baseball! After joining hearts and hands around the table, we'll dash off to yet another baseball game where we'll cheer on Son #2 and my husband (the coach).
Today hasn't necessarily been an "exciting" kind of day. It's just been made up of the ordinary stuff of life. Yet I trust that God is using these ordinary moments to give our boys a sense of security. I pray that through their dad's selfless love and interaction with them, they're getting a clearer picture of their heavenly Father's love. And I pray that in the simple, quiet moments of life, they see a dad and mom who find joy in walking with their God and loving their family.
