Some traditions are only for a season. Some traditions fade away, only to be resurrected later. Such is the case with one of my childhood favorites...Spritz Cookies.
In actuality, I don't know that they were ever considered a tradition. I'm not certain how often my mom made them or how often I assisted. All I know is that they stand out among my favorite childhood Christmas memories.
It's been years and years since they've graced our Christmas cookie platter. I hadn't given them a whole lot of thought. That is, until this past May.
As I helped my parents sort through and box up 30+ years of memories in my childhood home, my mom came across her old cookie press. My heart practically bounded out of my chest as she offered it to me. I was so excited to share a little of my childhood with our boys! The original box itself makes me smile. It's clearly evident that it's postmarked November 25, 1975. It's addressed to the home my parents rented in the early years of their marriage, prior to building their home in 1976. Also noteworthy is that at the time this cookie press was delivered to my parents' doorstep, my mom was less than one month away from giving birth to my baby brother. It makes me smile to think that she likely ordered it with her family in mind. She wanted to create festive cookies and provide her family with reminders of her love.
So it was with excitement...and a wee bit of trepidation...that I tried my hand at Spritz cookies for the first time this morning. Afterall, I wanted them to be as good as my mom's.
But furthermore, I want the sight and taste of these cookies to conjur up all kinds of loving memories for our boys someday...just the way they do for me today.

You make me smile.
Those look good! And I wonder...did she have to fill out an order form and actually mail it in somewhere or use the PHONE to order that cookie press? You know it took a little more effort to get that press than the way we order everything now...online!
*gasp*
i can't believe this. i was just reminscing about spritz cookies with a friend a few days ago. they too were a HUGE part of my childhood Christmas memories.
thankfully, i was in a clear enough mind to grab mom's cookie press after she passed. it's one of 5 things i took. the cookie press, a can of cream of mushroom soup, her crochet hook, a crossword book with her handwriting and an afaghan she made.
sadly, i couldn't find her recipe.......wanna share yours? pretty please.
I learn more about Christmas, it's true meaning and the importance of Christ-savoring traditions every year just because of you. I love you!
The music is amazing, too! Your cookies are (were) delicious!
Mmmmm....yummy! They look great, Nikki, and I'm glad you were the blessed recipient of your mom's press. :)
I loved reading about this sweet tradition - and the memories you had and are now making with your boys.
Your words just make me smile sweet friend!
Love,
Leslie
Spritz are a part of our family traditon also and my Mom still makes them each year. Occasionally while growing up my sister and I would help making them. I'll have to ask Mom when she is making them as I am hungry for them now that I see your pictures. -- Amy
