Our family has used various means and resources for family devotions throughout the years. While we've read many excellent books, I don't think we've ever had a plan that has excited me as much as the one we've implemented for this new year.
Perhaps you've heard of it. It's the Essential 100 Challenge, a Bible reading plan that lays out 100 key readings from Scripture. It features 50 readings from the Old Testament and 50 from the New. The first five readings from Genesis include Creation, The Fall, The Flood, God's Covenant with Noah, and the Tower of Babel.
After reading the assigned passage of Scripture, we read the corresponding chapter from "The Essential Bible Guide" by Whitney T. Kuniholm. This is an additional option to the reading plan, but one that I believe pulls it all together in a way that is practical, understandable, and engaging. He offers an explanation for each Bible passage and provides application questions for further discussion.
I love not only that we're getting a clear overview of God's redemption plan through the reading of His Word, but that Scripture is coming alive to our boys. I also love that this plan is doable. How many of us have grown discouraged because we've had goals and aspirations to be consistent with family devotions, only to end up with yet another devotional book or Bible reading plan collecting dust? Our family set a goal to read through the Bible in one year which translates to a couple readings a week. Like I said, it's very doable.
Check out E100 Challenge website (listed above) and consider how God is going to use His Word to impact you and your family!

Which kit or materials did you get for your family? It looks neat. We are close to finishing our current devotional and I'd love something more to challenge my older children.
