Welcome to my new home at Blogspot! I hope you'll come on in and make yourselves at home. I did a bit of pruning, but for the most part, what you find should feel somewhat comfortable and familiar. I guess my packing up, changing, and moving mode has struck Blogland, too.
Speaking of moving ~ With my parents' aforementioned move to a new home, I'm inheriting what I've decided to lovingly label my "quirky treasures." Last week I inherited a somewhat tattered book from my childhood with a handwritten message from my grandma. I also got my mom's long-lost Spritz Cookie Press. I'd been asking her about it for years...I was thrilled when it re-appeared! My loot also includes an old red scarf from when I was a little girl, a doily that belonged to my great grandma, my mom's big canning kettle, and two boxes of Nancy Drew books! Ah, yes. My parents' junk is my treasure.
But as much as I cherish the above items, I also brought home something of seemingly more recognizable value. My parents had been housing my wedding dress for 16+ years. Following our wedding, they had it drycleaned and sealed. It's been tucked away in my old closet for years. Out of sight, out of mind. But at long last, they told me it was time to relocate my dress...to my own home. Makes sense.
Before we got married, I longingly paged through a Bride's magazine, and I found the picture of my dream dress. I eagerly showed it to my future mother-in-law, as she is a professional seamstress. Long story short, she duplicated this amazing dress perfectly...without a pattern. I remember what it looks like: the ivory-colored lace, the beautiful beadwork. It's gorgeous.Do you have any idea how hard it its to walk past this box day after day? I walk past it and long to peek inside. It's whispering my name.
I don't have any daughters who might one day wear my wedding dress. If I did, I'd patiently anticipate its unveiling in 10-15 years. But recently I've been wondering on what joyous occasion I will see it again. A future daughter-in-law? A granddaughter, perhaps? Maybe not till a fashion show of antique wedding gowns when I'm old and gray...
The little girl in me...not to mention, the big girl, too...is tempted...really tempted...to break it open and take a peek. Wouldn't that be fun? But then what would I do with it? It seems like I need to have a grander occasion that my own curiosity. Perhaps I'm looking for permission. Perhaps I'm looking for inspirational ideas.
So what would you do? Has the little girl in you eagerly broken the seal on your well-preserved wedding gown, or is it still safely put away for "someday?" I'd love to hear your stories...

Hi, Nikki! I love the look of your new blog...can't wait to keep up with you and your precious family here!
Love, Tracy
Oh! I thought I could be the first to leave a comment at your new address... oh well...
:o)
My wedding dress was taken care of by a vindictive cat about a year after we were married. So my dress is but a memory.
I don't know what I'd do if I were you. I know I would peek. But then again, I don't often get to experience the level of satisfaction that comes with delayed gratification.
Whatever you choose will be best, just let us know what that is!
Nice new blog!
As far as my wedding dress, I know I haven't even been married 4 years, yet, but I tried mine on last summer when my sister was getting married. It was tons of fun. :)
When I was little, our church had a "fashion show" and everyone could wear their wedding dresses and have tea together at church, or something. I remember going with my mom, and I think that would be tons of fun to have a reason to wear it again!
Also, the head seamstress where I bought my dress told me that you can wash it once a year in the washing machine inside a big pillow case and it will keep it nice and white and then you don't have to pay to seal it up and never see it again.
Your new blog looks great! Quite a few people seem to be making the move. Is blogspot really easier to use?
As far as my wedding dress I never did have it sealed up and it has been hanging in a big pink bag in a basement closet. I keep wanting to try it on again but have yet to do it. Maybe for our anniversary. :) It sure would be nice to have an occasion to wear it again though.
Your new blog is awesome! I want to move over here, but hate to lose a couple years worth of blog postings, can you share with me how you moved it all over?
As for your wedding dress...how about keeping it and having little dedication/Baptism outfits made for your grandchildren one day. Just a thought. :) This is maybe too corny, but you know how boys wear those kerchief's in their suits when they get married? How about making them for your sons out of that dress?
I'm back for another visit and love your new blog!
When we got married my husband and I were the ones who paid for just about everything except the reception wich was very nice but there was no dance d.j. or anything like that. I could not afford to BUY a gown and being as tall as I am, well they were hard to come by in longer lengths so I opted to rent my gown. And even now as I think back on it yes, I do wish I had it still to look at and pass down to one of my daughters but then again, would they really want to wear my dress? I know I would NEVER have worn my moms!! So I guess my dress is all a memory too.
Hey Nikki! I love your header and your colors! Looks like we both made a switch about the same time!! Come visit my new place when you have a chance. :)

Well, mine is sealed in my attic. I go mine when my parents left my childhood home as well. I'm not sure what I would do if it were taunting me like that...I am a little scared of my attic so out of sight, out of mind! LOL!
Let us know if you give in. :)

PS...pretty new blog!
Dear Nikki,
I love your new blog template!
I have a box just like yours! I too have been tempted to open it; but it sits underneath the stairs tucked away. Bethany has her own sense of style so I would be surprised if she wears my dress someday; but maybe a future daughter in law will want to wear it.
Happy Week-end!

Oh do i share your litter grils struggle:)Mine is sealed in a box in our basement and I have so many times been tempted to "just try it on" but somehow I manage to refrain, probably especially since I have twin girls that my some day fight over it, or not:)
Wow! The new blog is great!
As far as wedding dresses go, I never had mine sealed, but it is hanging in a clear plastic zipped bag in the closet. I haven't gotten it out recently, but I wonder if it might have faded some. The problem with passing my dress to my daughter or anyone else is that I was super tiny when I first got married, less than 100 pounds, and the dress was form fitted around the middle. I'm not sure who, including me, would ever be able to fit into it.
As for your dress, could you open it on your anniversary or some other day that is really special between you and your hubby. Can't you have it sealed back up again? I just don't think I could stare longingly at that box forever especially since it might be a really long while before a daughter-in-law or descendant comes along that would wear it.
OPEN IT!!
I opened my sealed box before I was married a year! Your boys would love to see it and the purpose of special memories is to relive them!
I vote to open if you want to! Mine is stored in a box under my bed. My daughter would love to one day wear it. That would be sweet if the style is something she would even like.
Your new blog is beautiful!
Love,
Leslie
