When the wisemen knelt in worship to the little King, they brought gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Inspired by the three gifts they brought to Jesus, my husband and I made the choice to give three gifts to each of our three boys, as well. The choice was made when our oldest son was a toddler, so they've never known any other way.
When our boys were younger, this family guideline translated into a book, a new article of clothing, and a toy. Now that they're older, there is not as much rhyme or reason to it, but the tradition of three gifts remains. In recent years, we often surprise them with one final joint gift after all the others have been opened. Because it comes unexpectedly, their reactions are over the top with excitement! It's a poignant reminder to me of Matthew 7:11...
"If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!"
Our three-gift tradition has greatly reduced the pressure that we as parents so easily place on ourselves. And while we have a long way to go, it's also helped to create a spirit of contentment and simplicity in each one of us.
