Years ago, friends of ours shared a custom they enjoyed each Christmas Eve while living in Austria. Each year on this day, the father of the family takes the kids out for the whole day---perhaps to a museum, the movies, or other child-friendly events. While they are out, the mom spends the day decorating their home and preparing for their festive celebration. Later that night, as the family has re-assembled, a small bell is rung, indicating the long-awaited moment. The Christ Child is born! This is the children's invitation to see the beautifully-lit tree in all its splendor for the very first time.
It was after learning of this Austrian tradition that our family embraced it and put our own spin on it. Each year on Christmas Eve day, my husband and our boys visit numerous nursing homes throughout our area, delivering cards, candy canes, and a whole lot of Christmas cheer to our elderly friends.
While they are away, I spend the day making final preparations...both of my home and my heart. I may wrap a few gifts, tidy up, or get started on our Christmas Eve dinner. But I also spend quiet, treasured moments with Jesus as I get alone with Him and pray. The words "Let every heart prepare Him room" ring in my ears...and I prayerfully consider what that means . What is it in my life that crowds Him out?
Though I love the parties, festivities, and all-around excitement of December, I cherish the joyful anticipation, stillness, and quiet ponderings of Christmas Eve day. My God---the greatest Gift-giver--- knows just what my heart needs. And it's not more "stuff." It's a joy, contentedness, and satisfaction in Him alone. I'm thankful that He provides this day to help me prepare, prioritize, and re-focus my heart.
